33rd Annual Stone Steps Surf Contest in Leucadia

Stone Steps, a surf spot in Leucadia, California, was chosen in 1967 by Richard Dowdy and Jim Jenks as the location for a surf contest with a difference: contestants had to drink about a quart of beer before each heat.  Both were working at Hansen Surfboards when they came up with the idea. Richard and Jim’s unique contest continued under their guidance until 1973, when both stepped away to pursue their careers, Richard as editor of Surfing magazine, while Jim founded Ocean Pacific Sunwear. The contest has continued every summer, albeit without the beer. This Steps video is a collection of photos Richard shot during events first seven years.
