Photo opportunities were plentiful and the people I met were enjoyable to talk with. The winding roads (Highway 1 south) were as twisty as Big Sur’s Highway 1, with little opportunity to find a place to pull off to shoot the vistas below. Except for a brief visit to San Francisco, I avoided the cities and towns. The results of my eight-day run up the coast and back are below.

As a photographer, my primary focus is on action: Indycars at Indianapolis and other tracks, musicians on stage, and surfing in California. In the summer of 2008, along with others, I waited for big south swells to hit our shores. But the one California break that is as enormously photogenic as any on the coast didn’t come alive.
