New Workshop For Encaustic Art Institute

New Mexico’s Encaustic Art Institute is located south of Santa Fe, near Cerrillos, New Mexico. Founded by visionary artist and builder Douglas Mehrens, EAI has announced construction of a new workshop that will house visiting artists and encaustic painting students. The Institute’s large gallery on its grounds offers opportunities for all encaustic artists to exhibit and sell their working in one central location. Those who have wanted to learn this process of painting with pigmented wax can attend a one- or two-day workshop being offered Sunday, August 1st. Instructor is Russell Thurston, who has exhibited and taught encaustic painting in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Santa Fe during the past ten years. See examples of his work at www.russellthurston.com.

EAI’s Permanent Gallery is open to the public Saturdays and Sundays, 1-6 p.m., March through October. February through November the gallery is open on weekdays by appointment only. Contact Douglas at: 505-424-6487.

The purposes of the Encaustic Art Institute are:

• To exhibit the work of member encaustic artists;

• To promote public awareness and understanding of the encaustic medium;

• To provide space and programs for professional encaustic artists in which to exchange information about encaustic processes and techniques for working with wax;

• To offer educational workshops for people of all ages in learning how to create art with encaustic.
