Encaustic Art Exhibit Opens at Ivanffy-Uhler Gallery in Carlsbad

By Richard Dowdy

On January 28th, encaustic artist Nanette Newbry debuted a new collection of paintings and sculpture, primarily encaustic paintings, along with a large oil painting and two mixed media works at the Ivanffy/Uhler Gallery, 565 Grand Avenue in Carlsbad. The opening of Ms. Newbry’s exhibition coincides with the monthly art walk in Carlsbad. Opening night brought a large crowd to the gallery to view the works and meet with the artist.

The exhibit, entitled Image and Memory, focuses on the the artist’s exploration of how memory shapes the human experience. Working in encaustic, a process that has been practiced since the fifth century by Greek artists, employs heated wax and pigment to produce paintings that possess depth and texture that is unique.

Ms. Newbry comments: “Color is intuitive and changes throughout the process…the medium allows for reworking the surface, creating distinct textures and forms, transparency and luminosity.”

The exhibition continues through March 18, 2010.
